Knorr - Dollar Option for Backpack Meal

We are always on the lookout for meal options for hiking, camping, or backpacking. Anything goes, from home made to prepackaged, and combinations of the two. This time we were thinking cheap. And Knorr provides just that. Their packaged noodle and rice dishes are great for on the trail. Easy to make, and doable without the milk and butter called for in the recipe. Adding other items like fresh veggies or possibly wild plants, or other processed foods such as tuna are all good. The Knorr packages offer cheap, quick, and fun experimental meal options. Tips To Keep Food Safe to Eat When Going Camping

Do you have any experience of keeping your food safe to eat when you go camping? Below are some tips which will help you have a safe and joyable camping trip.

First, you will want to plan ahead of time the food you are going to eat and when. By doing this it will help you determine whether or not you should freeze an item before putting it in your camp cooler. Also remember to plan how you are going to cook your food and make sure your have the proper equipment along to do so.

Second, you want to keep everything clean to prevent bacteria from coming in contact with your food. Make sure you wash your hands prior to handling any food and after handling raw meats or raw eggs. If you place all your raw meats in plastic bags it will help keep the juices away from your other foods.

And third, keep your food cold.

Make sure your cooler has plenty of block ice for your camping trip. Remember to keep your cooler in the shade and even place a blanket on top of the cooler for extra insulation. It is a good idea to bring a separate cooler for snacks and drinks. This will keep your main food cooler colder by not having to get in it as often.

So, as you can see, following these three food safety tips will keep your food safe and make your next camping trip much more enjoyable.

Dehydrated Spaghetti Meal Great for Backpacking

With the warmer weather approaching and talk of much more camping and backpacking in the air, it seemed a great time to begin preparing food ideas for the months ahead. Dehydrated foods are great for hiking and packing in that they need no special care, such as refrigeration. If a meal is not used one week, it is good for the next. Initially, some weight might be saved, but water, either carried or obtained along the way is a necessity. We cooked up excess spaghetti and meat sauce, left it sit overnight in the fridge. Dehydrated for about 6 hours and put it up in vacuum seal bags. Some of the bags we perforated by the hard sharp noodles, so next time we will put it in a small sandwich bag first, then the vacuum bag. Within days, we were on the Appalachian Trail and had an opportunity to cook that batch on a homemade alcohol stove. The first round was ever so slightly wet, but had good texture and taste. The second round of cooking was just about spot on water to dehydrated food. Please visit www.usframecrew.com http

Food Spoilage During Hiking and Camping Trips

Americans' love the outdoors. Hiking and camping are great activities the whole family can enjoy. While outdoors you must handle food properly as indicated; otherwise, you may experience food spoilage and illness can occur, spoiling your trip as well.

Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold
Seems simple enough. Bring along a cooler for the cold foods. If you are hiking or camping it's easier to cook the food at home, cool it, and then bring the food along in the cooler. Food that is cooked on the fire or camp stove should be eaten when cooking is complete and then stored appropriately.

Safe Drinking Water
Never depend on there being fresh water available. When starting out bring bottled water or tap water with you. Replenish your water supply from tested water systems along the way whenever possible. If you run out of water and are not near a shelter on the trail you can boil water from the stream.

It should be at a rolling boil for at least 1 minute.

For higher elevations, boil water for at least 3 minutes. If you wanted to go to the expense you could always bring along water purification tablets. Simply follow the directions on the package.

What Foods to Bring
If your hiking trip is more than a day, the food situation gets a little trickier. You'll have to include items that don't spoil. Some items that are non-perishables include:

· Peanut butter in plastic jars;
· Concentrated juice boxes;
· Canned fish or meat, such as tuna, ham, chicken, and beef;
· Dried soups & noodles;
· Beef jerky and other dried meats;
· Dehydrated foods;
· Dried fruits and nuts; and
· Powdered milk and fruit drinks

You should be sure to include some protein because hiking can be strenuous and you need to keep up your strength.

Cleaning up camp after meals
Whether hiking or camping you will be washing your dishes, utensils and cookware.

There are specific rules to adhere to. Biodegradable camping soap in liquid and solid forms should be used but use it sparingly and keep it out of all water supplies, as it will pollute.

If you use soap wash the pots at your site, not near the water. Dispose of dirty water on dry ground, well away from fresh water. Some outdoor enthusiasts use baking soda to wash their utensils. Use disposable cloths for fast cleanups. To avoid any complications, be sure to wash your hands before and after handling food.

General Rules for Outdoor Food Safety
Plan ahead: decide what you are going to eat and how you are going to cook it; then plan what equipment you will need. After your bellies are full and you are roasting marshmallows around the campfire, kick back, relax, and enjoy your trip with the knowledge that all is well with the food supply.

Stores safely long-term for cooking or boiling water when an emergency hits and power goes out - an essential component of any food storage / preparation plan. Not subject to legal storage limits like propane and gasoline. Fuel cells do not "bleed off" or decline over time like propane canisters. Simpler, sturdier, more weatherproof, and more durable than traditional propane or canister stoves. Unlike gelled alcohol (Sterno, etc) stoves, Stove In A Can burns like a wood campfire - hot enough to boil water quickly - and unlike tablet fuel (Esbit, Triox, etc), Stove In A Can is not made of toxic chemicals. Environmentally friendly - the packaging IS the product; can be lit, used, extinguished (by placing the lid back on the can), and re-used multiple times. Camping and Barbecue Adventures

The great thing about camping is that you get to decide how the adventure unfolds. It can be a relaxing occasion away from the stress of daily life, or it can be an action-packed romp in the wilderness. No matter which you choose, one thing will always be a constant - you're going to be enjoying some great food! In the world of camping, food is the primary attraction for many outdoor camping adventurers and they necessarily care about other activities as much. These people can leave the walking and hiking to other people while they focus on cooking awesome food with their friends and family. There’s something really great about being able to cook outdoors and breathing absolutely fresh air while preparing food made in the most wholesome way possible. This type of thing is also a bonding event that brings friends and family together around the barbecue. You can create awesome memories for your children who will be eager to share them with their own families when they grow older.

There are no set rules when it comes to food and camping and that's what's so great about it. You can choose to July in your personal favorites or go with traditional standards that are considered classics. It's possible to find folks who prefer to simply cook by campfire, and there is nothing wrong with this particular method. But keep in mind, if you are looking for even more convenience then it might be worth going with a charcoal grill. There are many portable charcoal grills for sale that will allow you to prepare a feast on a simple apparatus that you can set up with relative ease. And better than gas grills, you don’t have to worry about purchasing canisters of fuel which can be hard to carry around for any sized car. Some people even go with to barbecues so that they can set up an outdoor kitchen for maximum cooking variety. There are so many great grills on the market these days that you can really go wrong with whichever you choose.

Remember to be careful about food safety and cooking practices away from the conveniences of the modern kitchen. Looking at the grilling process itself, make sure that you take care to cook food thoroughly. There’s nothing worse than getting a bout of food poisoning on a camping trip with no medical resources available. Remember, you should always keep an eye on things without constantly moving your food around. Have faith in your barbecue and allow it to do its job so that you get deliciously juicy food that is a signature of a great grilling. Make sure to incorporate as much variety as possible in terms of main meets and side dishes to really take advantage of outdoor eating. You may need a bit of experience, but in time you can become an expert grill or that gets the most out of your charcoal grill and BBQ. Just don't be surprised if you come back from your camping trip a few pounds heavier.
