Camping Food Storage - Hints and Tips

One of the main problems when camping is keeping food as fresh as possible. The last thing you need is to pack your food for your camping trip, only to note that it has gone past its best within a couple of days. So how do you keep your food fresh without a refrigerator? Well here are some great camping food storage techniques.

If you are traveling light, i.e.,lightweight backpacking, then you obviously do not want to carry around a cooler or ice-packs because these are heavy. So one of the items a lot of backpackers use is the good old zip lock bags. These are the backpackers' best friend, they are heavy duty, lightweight and flat, and they do a pretty good job of keeping food fresh. A great tip is to suck most of the air out with a straw before you seal the bag, that way it will keep the food longer.

Another quick tip for campers and backpackers is to take powdered or dried goods (such as eggs and milk) that can be reconstituted.

The benefits to this method are that you can take whole trips worth of milk and eggs in just one or 2 zip lock bags, thus eliminating the need to carry around heavy cartons of milk and fragile eggs.

If are camping for longer periods of time, say, a week or more, then it is a good idea to take coolers. A good tip for great camping food, is to fill one of the coolers with dry ice rather than the normal ice, as it lasts longer. Use this one as the designated cooler that only gets opened once or twice a day. Then transfer everything that you need for the day ahead into a secondary cooler. This cooler is filled with ice-packs, and should keep cool for most of the day. Use a third cooler for storing all your dry goods so that they are out of direct sunlight.

There are many ways to keep food fresh without a refrigerator, and these are just a few examples.

I Hope this has given you some ideas for your camping food storage.
